Right off of Duval Street in Key West, Florida, is the Curry Mansion. The iconic property, with its white facade has been a big tourist spot for visitors for decades. Whether a history enthusiast, architecture lover, or just a tourist, everyone should check out the Curry Mansion.

A Glimpse into History

The Curry Mansion, constructed in 1869 by William Curry, Florida’s first millionaire, reflects in its structure the ambition of its original owner. Curry made his money through the shipping and wrecking industries, the key economic activities of Key West during the 19th century. His house was designed to reflect his success, with Victorian elegance and practical features suited to the tropical climate.

Architectural Marvel

The Curry Mansion is an example of Victorian-style architecture, with woodwork detail featuring porches. The wraparound verandas beautify the mansion and also help in keeping it cool, as it shades the house from the sun and creates breezes that cool the environment.

Inside, the mansion is as impressive. High ceilings, antique furnishings, and polished hardwood floors bring visitors back to the late 1800s. Many original details, such as ornate chandeliers and decorative molding, remain intact, adding to the mansion’s authenticity.

Today’s Curry Mansion

Today, the Curry Mansion is known as the Amsterdam’s Curry Mansion Inn, offering a welcoming bed-and-breakfast-style stay with every comfort of modern times, combining the elegance of the past. The rooms are differently decorated with period furnishings and offer a cozy experience in a antique hotel style.

Not only that, but guests can also visit the museum displaying artifacts, photographs, and documents that narrate the story of both the Curry family and Key West’s history.
