Architecture as Care, Resilience, and Social Infrastructure


A student-led architecture research project exploring how a compact rural dwelling might combine seismic awareness, passive environmental design, social dignity, and the practical constraints of construction in mountainous Yunnan, China.


The Mother's Canopy did not begin as a studio assignment or a design competition. It began as a relationship. Through ALI Young Pioneers, I became connected with two students in a remote mountain community in Yunnan Province. The organization had supported the students through educational assistance, gifts, and continued personal engagement. A 2025 visit to the community made the limitations of the existing home, and the determination of the family living within it, impossible to treat as an abstract problem.

The project therefore began with a question of responsibility:


What responsibility does architecture have when the people affected by the design are real rather than hypothetical?


The answer could not be a dramatic object imposed on the landscape. It had to begin with listening, observation, and the recognition that housing influences more than physical shelter. A home also shapes safety, study, privacy, health, family routines, and the ability to imagine a future.



Existing Conditions: Designing from Reality

The existing dwelling revealed that the architectural challenge was not simply a lack of floor area. The more urgent issues involved enclosure, protection from seasonal weather, household infrastructure, spatial organization, and the difficulty of transporting materials to a remote mountainous site.


· Incomplete or inadequate doors, windows, and weather protection

· Limited separation among sleeping, living, storage, and study activities

· Exposure to rain, humidity, insects, and daily temperature variation

· Limited access to dependable water and electrical infrastructure

· Difficult last-mile transportation for materials, equipment, and labor


These observations established the project’s first principle: design decisions must emerge from the family, site, climate, access conditions, and maintenance capacity rather than from a predetermined visual style.



Four research questions guided the transition from humanitarian concern to architectural investigation:


Design Lineage: Learning from Architects and Engineers

The project was informed not by copying particular buildings, but by studying ways of thinking that could test the proposal.


Lina Bo Bardi | Dignity and Participation

Bo Bardi’s work encouraged me to view architecture as a social act. Her influence appears in the project’s refusal to reduce humanitarian housing to minimum survival. Privacy, study, family gathering, personal storage, daylight, and beauty are treated as dimensions of dignity rather than optional extras.


Peter Rice | Engineering as Design

Rice demonstrated that structural thinking can generate architectural form. In this project, elevation, the visible frame, and the external stair grew from questions of moisture, airflow, seismic mass, assembly, transportation, and usable social space. Engineering is not placed behind the architecture. It disciplines and helps create it.


Cecil Balmond | Relationships Among Systems

Balmond’s systems thinking encouraged the roof, structure, circulation, water, energy, and family routines to be considered as an interconnected network. Each major component is asked to address more than one need.


Concept Development

The design evolved through alternatives rather than arriving as a fixed answer. Early studies tested how elevation, enclosure, circulation, structure, and environmental services could coexist within a compact footprint.

· Roof, water, and energy integration

· Transport dimensions and assembly logic

· Feedback, revision, and model development


A Section That Organizes Care

The project’s central move is sectional. The primary living space is lifted above the ground, creating a protected outdoor room below and a more secure enclosed home above.


The raised volume separates occupied space from damp soil and shallow runoff, promotes airflow beneath the floor, and expands usable family space without increasing the enclosed footprint. The shaded area below can support gathering, play, work, laundry, and seasonal living.


The ground becomes a form of support. The house above becomes a canopy. The idea of care is therefore embedded in section and daily use rather than added as decoration.



Seismic Resilience as a Design Driver

Because the project is located in Yunnan, seismic awareness must shape the architecture from the beginning. The concept favors low structural mass, compact geometry, balanced distribution of stiffness, clear lateral resistance, and continuous paths that transfer forces from roof and floor systems to the frame, foundations, and ground.


Elevation provides environmental and social benefits, but it also increases the importance of bracing, anchorage, overturning resistance, safe circulation, and site-specific foundations. The lower structure cannot be treated as a few slender, unbraced supports. It requires professional structural development in both principal directions.


· Lightweight roof and enclosure

· Regular structural geometry

· Roof and floor diaphragms

· Bracing or moment-resisting frames in both directions

· Inspectable connections and anchored foundations

· Restraint of water tanks, batteries, cabinets, glazing, and other nonstructural elements


Environmental Systems: The Roof as Infrastructure

In a remote settlement, shelter and infrastructure cannot be separated. The roof is conceived as weather protection, shade, a platform for solar generation, and a surface for rainwater collection.


Passive strategies come first. Cross-ventilation, protected openings, daylight, insulation, shading, and underfloor airflow reduce dependence on mechanical systems. A small energy system could support lighting, communications, fans, refrigeration, and water pumping. Rainwater may support appropriate household uses after treatment and verification under local public-health requirements.



Designing the Last Mile

Road and path limitations make transportation part of the design brief. A component that is efficient in a factory may still be impossible to deliver or lift at the site. The project therefore explores a kit of parts rather than assuming that a complete volumetric unit can reach the community.

Repetitive members, limited connection types, clear labeling, dry assembly, manageable weights, and repairable materials can help reduce on-site uncertainty. Generic performance requirements are preferred over reliance on one proprietary product so the design can adapt to local supply and expertise.


The Inhabited Stair: Memory in Everyday Use

Moving the stair outside the insulated volume preserves compact interior space and makes circulation part of the building’s identity. Storage integrated into the stair can hold books, school supplies, clothing, snacks, and personal objects.

This detail responds to the students’ wishes without claiming that architecture can replace what has been lost. The stair becomes useful first and symbolic through use. It carries the family toward the home while carrying parts of daily life.


Reflection: What the Project Changed

Before beginning this project, I often understood architecture primarily through form, space, and visual composition. Designing in response to a real family changed that understanding.


I learned that every structural decision, environmental strategy, and construction detail eventually becomes part of someone’s daily life. A beautiful section is not enough if the foundation is inappropriate, the drainage fails, the components cannot reach the site, or the systems cannot be maintained. Empathy becomes meaningful only when it is translated into disciplined decisions.


The Mother's Canopy remains unfinished in the most productive sense. It is a framework for listening, testing, professional collaboration, and revision. The project taught me to understand architecture not as rescue, but as responsibility.
